How To Pick Out A Decent Fishing Rod Thursday, May 01, 2008 If you're looking for a new fishing rod, the choices are almost endless. When you walk into your local tackle or discount store, there are literally hundreds of different rods to choose from. Here's my biggest tip: If you aren't a professional angler, there is no need to spend more than fifty bucks on a fishing rod. I'm of course referring to most freshwater fishing. My favorite rods (that I've had for years) cost me about thirty bucks each. There is no need to break the bank when buying a fishing rod. As a matter of fact, many times you can find better deals on the internet than in retail stores, so go the retail store to actually "feel" the rod, and then write down the name model number and manufacturer of the one you like and look for it on the internet. You'll probably save a few bucks.

Harold Knight On Gobbler Decoys Monday, March 03, 2008 Just four years ago no one even considered using a mature gobbler decoy. Prevailing opinion was that a big, strutting decoy would spook the birds, and truthfully, the few examples that were on the market probably did scare the bajesus out of all but the most ignorant tom turkeys. The decoys were huge, plastic creatures that only remotely resembled an actual turkey. Then, turkey hunting legends Harold Knight and David Hale had an idea.
HPU Patterns Fly Fishing Thursday, February 28, 2008 All Hook-Point-Up (HPU) patterns have three components. First, lead or brass eyes placed below the hook-eye. Second, some sort of tying material such as deer hair, feathers, fur, or hanked material tied in above the hook-eye. Third, a sturdy and often large streamer hook. The popular Clouser Minnow is an example of such a pattern. Its greatest attribute is to ride hook-point-up (h.p.u.) in all types of waters - but at what cost to the angler? When using large hooks, the amount of weight in the eyes creates problems. First it limits the size of rod can be used to cast the fly. Smaller weight rods like five weights and less perform poorly casting large weights, thus the angler is forced to use a heavier line-weight rod. Second, in shallow, debris, and/or weedy water - whether the water is moving or not - the heavy-eyed pattern often finds the bottom too quickly. Read More
